As a lifelong resident of the North Side, and like most of my neighbors, I rely on public transit to get me around the city and to the suburbs. I am committed to fully funding our mass transit system so that all Chicagoans can reach their destinations safely and on time.
Forty percent of the 6th Senate district relies on public transit. In the spring 2025 legislative session, the state senate passed a bill that lays the groundwork for long-overdue reforms to the way our transit system operates. The legislation also considers the impact our regional transportation system has on the environment.
The senate’s legislation was the product of months of collaboration with riders, transit agencies, and experts, and I am proud to support it. I am committed to working with anyone to get this done. We need a stronger, modernized, more reliable public transit system that works for everyone.
Pedestrian safety must be prioritized at every street and every intersection. In our most recent legislative session, I pushed for and helped pass Senate Bill 1559, which would require IDOT and CDOT to have safety studies on the agenda when they meet to discuss traffic and pedestrian fatalities. It would also require that departments identify trends and patterns associated with fatal and near-fatal crashes.
At the same time, we must make our roadways safer. There have been 16,000 crashes and 4,000 injuries on DuSable Lake Shore in the last five years. I took action this session, directing the University of Illinois Chicago’s Urban Transportation Center to study crash data, risky driving behavior, and traffic enforcement technologies, and look for solutions to prevent reckless driving on DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
